Firstly, I would like to congratulate the U14 and U15 football squads for winning their respective Maidstone District Cup finals last week.  The U15 squad beat Aylesford School 3 – 0 and the U14 squad beat The Malling School 4 – 3 on penalties after a 2 – 2 draw.  Well done to all the players, and thank you to Mr Smith and Mr Hughes respectively for coaching the players all season.  We now wish the U13 football squad the best of luck as they are playing in their cup final tonight.

Last week Year 9 enjoyed two and a half days taking part in the Year 9 Business Challenge.  From planning a new development for Maidstone town centre to managing the highways across Kent, the students took part in a number of different tasks that saw them consider a variety of diverse challenges in the business world.  Thank you to everyone who was involved in organising the Challenge, and to the many outside presenters who facilitated the sessions.

This week our Year 9 Curriculum Extra Lecture Programme continues with Mrs Brooks presenting a lecture in the performing arts field.  These lectures have been designed for Year 9 to continue their interest and understanding in the wider curriculum that MGS has always offered.

This week sees the first full week of GCSE and A-level examinations.  Year 11 started last week with RS and Biology, but it is the turn of Year 13 to start their exams this week. Best wishes to all students completing examinations this week.

Tomorrow the MGS 475 Showcase is taking place which will see a host of MGS singers, musicians and actors stage a variety of performances to mark the School’s 475th birthday.  The Showcase takes place in the Big Hall and starts at 6.30pm.  Do come along - you may even see a guest appearance from a very special performer!

Last week a number of year 10 and 12 PE students took to the road and went down to Canterbury University to experience a day of fitness and nutrition activities.  Students got to have a tour of the facilities as well as complete a variety of exercises to test their own fitness.  They returned to school having learned a lot about how their body works.  Thank you to the PE Department for organising.

Finally, the new video wall in the main reception of the school, to mark the 475th birthday of MGS is now completed installed and working.  It is huge!  Thank you to everyone who supported the project.

This week we say goodbye to years 11 and 13.  They have reached the point when they now need to focus on their upcoming GCSE and A-level examinations.  Good luck to them all.  A number of these students will now become Old Maidstonians, and they are leaving MGS to begin the next chapter of their lives.  There is a huge community of Old Maidstonians beyond the school gates, with many wishing to remain in contact with each other and the school, and the Old Maidstonian Society is the best place to do this.  Our leaving students should now be proud to call themselves Old Maidstonians.

Remaining with the theme of examinations, Year 10 finish their examinations this week after spending most of last week in the Sports Hall completing theirs.  Results for these examinations will be released soon.  Well done Year 10

Last week the company installing our new video wall were on site, following the last couple of weeks when we had one on loan.  Following last year’s fundraising campaign, and a significant donation from an Old Maidstonian to kick start the project, we can now enjoy what having a video wall can offer.  It will completely transform the reception of the school.  Thank you to everyone who donated, and to the Old Maidstonian who initially triggered the idea.
